Rejection Sensitivity: Handling Friendship Disappointment

Managing Disappointment

When a friendship breaks down, rejection can feel overwhelming. Explore ways families can support someone experiencing intense disappointment.

Today we’re managing the disappointment of a friendship breakdown in our household.

Supporting someone who is upset and has rejection sensitivity can be extremely challenging, but it’s essential to approach the situation with care and empathy. Here are a few tips:

Listen with Empathy

Listen without judgment and give them space to share what they’re feeling and thinking without interrupting or trying to fix anything.

Acknowledge Their Feelings

Acknowledge how they feel and remind them their emotions make sense. Reassure them that even intense feelings will pass with time too.

Offer Reassurance

Let them know you’re there for them whenever they need you, whether they want to talk, sit quietly together or just have a cuddle too.

Respect Their Space

Give them space if they need time alone to process. Let them know you’re nearby, and ready to listen whenever they feel ready to chat.

Be Patient

Remember that rejection sensitivity can take time to work through. Stay patient, keep showing up and offer support along the way, too.

Remember that each person is unique, and what works for one may not work for another. Tailor your approach to the individual needs and preferences, and be there for them in a supportive and understanding way. It may be necessary to seek professional help if things get too tricky – I know that’s what we’ll be doing next week.
